# split-cash > split-cash is a free web app for splitting costs with friends: trips, shared flats, dinners and group gifts. People add what they paid, and at the end split-cash tells each person who to pay and how much, in as few transfers as possible. It has no ads and no paid plan, works in any phone browser, and is available in English and Russian. ## Key facts - Price: free. No ads, no paid tier, no limits on groups or expenses. - Platform: works in any modern phone or desktop browser and can be added to the home screen. Nothing to install. - Languages: English and Russian. - Splitting: equally, by exact amounts, by percentages or by shares; people who weren't there can be left out. - Settling up: balances are netted and turned into the fewest transfers; each transfer can be marked as paid. - Money: split-cash does not move money. People pay each other the way they usually do. - Privacy: a group is visible only to its members. - Currencies: each group has one currency; totals are never converted. - Made by Sabir (https://sabir.pro) as a non-profit side project. Contact: hello@split-cash.org ## How it works 1. Make a group and share the link. Name it, pick the currency, and send the invite link to your friends. 2. Add costs as they happen. Enter the amount, who paid and who shares it. Balances update for everyone. 3. Settle up at the end. Open Balances, make the suggested transfers, and mark each one as paid. ## What people use it for - A trip with friends: One group for the whole trip. Everyone adds what they paid from their own phone. - A shared flat: Rent, bills and groceries in one running balance. Settle monthly, or whenever it drifts. - A dinner out: Split the bill at the table, including who had what. - A tab with one friend: Track back-and-forth lending with one person without making a group. - A group gift: One person pays, and everyone sees exactly how much to chip in. - Costs abroad: Each group keeps its own currency, so a trip in euros stays in euros. ## Questions - **Why is split-cash free?** It costs about five dollars a month to host, and more people using it barely changes that. It is a non-profit side project with no ads and no paid plan. - **Do my friends need to install anything?** No. They open your invite link in their phone’s browser and create an account. They can add split-cash to the home screen so it opens like an app. - **What if a friend hasn’t signed up yet?** Add them to the group by name and record their costs. When they join, everything under that name becomes theirs. - **Is it really free?** Yes. There are no ads, no paid tier and no limits on groups or expenses. - **Does split-cash move money?** No. It works out who owes whom. You pay each other the way you usually do, then mark the payment as made. - **Who can see my groups?** Only the people in each group. Nobody else can find or open them. ## Pages - [Home](https://split-cash.org/): what split-cash does, with a worked example. - [Home in Russian](https://split-cash.org/ru/) - [Blog](https://split-cash.org/blog/) - [Privacy Policy](https://split-cash.org/privacy/): what is stored and who can see it. - [Terms of Use](https://split-cash.org/terms/) ## Blog posts - [Why I built split-cash](https://split-cash.org/blog/why-i-built-split-cash/): I got tired of an expense app that kept asking me to pay, so I built the small part of it I actually use and made it free for everyone.
